The Olathe City Council voted 7-0 Tuesday to approve a new playground at the Olathe Girls Softball Complex (OGSC).
The playground will replace one that was removed recently from the same spot after it “reached the end of its useful life.” The project will add new playground equipment and a new turf surface; it is part of a “larger OGSC Parking Improvement Project that will include replacement of the existing parking lot along with an additional parking lot being constructed behind the lower fields,” according to a city document.
J. Oliver Construction, LLC will build the playground for $88,359, which will come out of the park sales tax fund. It is expected to be completed this summer with the full OGSC project to be finished shortly after.
The item was originally on the consent agenda, but was pulled for a brief discussion by council member Wes McCoy. McCoy noted the two bids identified by staff for the project, the winning one for $88,359 and another for $127,650.
“That’s a $39,291 difference or 31 percent, so I just want to say … thank you all for doing your job and going out and finding the best bids for projects you’re doing for the city … If we can save here, save there, we can do more things somewhere else,” McCoy said.
OGSC is at 13901 W. 151st Street.
